An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is performed to address excess skin and soft tissue of the upper arms. This most commonly occurs following significant weight loss, ageing, or genetic predisposition, and may result in difficulty with clothing fit or discomfort with arm movement.
Arm lift surgery involves removal of excess skin from the upper arm, with the incision typically placed along the inner aspect of the arm where it is least visible. In some patients, an extended arm lift is required, where the incision extends into the axilla (armpit) or along the chest wall to address more extensive skin excess.
Dr Raymond routinely performs liposuction-assisted arm lift surgery, meaning liposuction of the arm is performed before skin removal. This approach helps reduce trauma to lymphatic channels, sensory nerves, and veins, while allowing more controlled reshaping.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia by Dr Raymond and his experienced surgical team at Hunter Valley Private Hospital or Newcastle Private Hospital. Where surgery is performed at Newcastle Private Hospital, VASER ultrasound-assisted liposuction may be utilised when appropriate.
Your consultation includes assessment of skin quality, degree of excess, fat distribution, and scar placement. The extent of surgery — standard or extended — is determined based on anatomy and functional concerns.
Most patients stay in hospital for one to two nights.
Compression garments are worn for four to six weeks, which we provide. Swelling and bruising are expected and gradually settle over several weeks.
Light activities are usually resumed within two weeks, with return to heavier lifting and exercise guided over six weeks.
Scars continue to mature over 12–18 months.
